Faithless – Tarantula

Faithless – Tarantula

“Tarantula” is one of Faithless’s darker, more brooding cuts rather than one of their huge euphoric crossover anthems. Back in 2004, when portable mini radios were still part of everyday life, I remember hearing it late at night during a show by DJ Jiten Abraham, cutting through a whole day of commercial music with something far moodier and more electronic.

On one of those shows, he played it back to back with Orbital’s “Technologique”, and I instantly fell in love with the energy. “Tarantula” has a distinctly dark, creeping, almost predatory energy, which makes the title fit perfectly. It moves with a slow, deliberate menace, less interested in easy release than in pulling you deeper into its atmosphere.

What grabbed me most was how confidently it ventured into techno territory. That edge made it feel different from the trance I was used to hearing, and it fascinated me straight away. Ever since that first listen, I’ve loved how Faithless let the tune breathe in the shadows, proving that tension, groove and mood can be every bit as powerful as a massive hands-in-the-air payoff.
